The Holy Beggars’ Gazette
BY OREN KROLL-ZELDIN
In 1972, members of the House of Love and Prayer began publishing a journal to spread those Hasidic and kabbalistic teachings central to the community. Called TheHoly Beggars’ Gazette, the journal started out as carefully curated transcriptions of Carlebach’s teachings from classes that he taught at the House. But within a year, it developed into a more robust journal that included stories, poems, and art to accompany the transcriptions of Carlebach’s teachings. Many of the issues were theme based. Sometimes they focused on teachings relating to an upcoming holiday, while other issues focused on lifecycle rituals, such as weddings. Edited by Elana Rappaort and Steven L. Maimes, during its years of publication, from 1972-1979, TheHoly Beggars’ Gazette featured contributions from numerous people, including notables like Allen Ginsburg and Zalman Schachter. The journal provides valuable insight into everyday life at the House not only in terms of the teachings contained within each issue, but also in relation to community announcements, notes, and funding requests.
